Shanghai Jiaotong University is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in China and is well-known at home and abroad. In the 1920s and 1930s, it has become a well-known higher education institution in China. The university is known as "Oriental MIT". In the early days of the founding of the People's Republic of China, in order to meet the needs of the country's economic construction, the school adjusted a considerable number of advantageous majors and teacher equipment to support the development of domestic brother institutions. In the mid-fifties, the school responded to the country ’s call for the construction of the northwestern part. According to the decision of the State Council, part of the school was relocated to Xi'an, divided into Shanghai and Xi'an sections of Jiaotong University. In March 1959, the two parts were listed as national key universities at the same time. In July, they were separately established under the approval of the State Council. The Shanghai Jiaotong University opened the name of Shanghai Jiaotong University. Construction of the Minhang campus began in 1985.
